Our Story
Tohetaka is a synthesis of my love for crafting recipes and my desire to connect with my lineage of strong, Māori women who were deeply connected to the land.
My first skincare formula was born when my sister brought me fresh chickweed from her garden. With its anti-inflammatory properties, I was inspired to make a chickweed salve to soothe cuts, burns and bug bites for my three small children.
After a long journey of self-discovery, I started my own business, inspired in part by a dandelion tattoo my sister inked by hand into my upper arm. For me, the dandelion symbolizes the powerful and overwhelming love and fear of motherhood, knowing your children will one day drift away like seeds on a breeze. It also teaches us, with its nourishing roots, leaves and flowers, that the simplest of things can be most healing.
Tohetaka means “dandelion” in the Māori language of my ancestors—a language that once seemed on the verge of fading away, but is now experiencing a powerful resurgence. This revival reflects a growing awareness of the damage we've caused by attempting to erase indigenous practices and ways of living in harmony with the Earth.
I've tried countless skincare products, but I always return to my simple, homemade remedies. The Earth provides everything we need for true beauty inside and out.
